A career with the TSB

Transcript

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is a recognized leader in the field of transportation safety.

We investigate accidents across the country – in our airspace, on our waterways, on our rail system, and pipelines.

Our work is all about determining what happened, and why, and how it can be prevented in the future.

Through our independent investigations, we identify safety gaps and advocate for critical changes, making travel safer for everyone.

We look at the causes and contributing factors to find out what happened and why to prevent future accidents.

We analyze human performance and organizational factors to identify risks in the transportation system.

By examining complex systems using highly specialized laboratory equipment, we can determine the exact point of failure on a component.

By crafting compelling narratives, we turn technical findings into actionable knowledge for industry and stakeholders.

We are nothing without our people. The backbone of the TSB is our collective passion to make a difference.

In addition to investigating transportation accidents in Canada, we also participate in foreign investigations to represent Canadian interests.

Our work leads to pivotal safety advancements and regulatory changes that address systemic risks.

As a former search and rescue helicopter pilot in the Canadian Forces, my primary duty was to save lives. Now at the TSB, I get to continue this important work and take an active role in advancing transportation safety.

I love working at the TSB because no two days are the same – it’s always changing. The diversity of knowledge and expertise of those who I work with are amazing.

No matter their role, all TSB employees share one goal – and that is to make Canada’s transportation system even safer.

Where we work

The TSB's head office is in Gatineau, Quebec, but most of its investigators work from field offices across the country so that they can respond quickly to transportation occurrences anywhere in Canada.

TSB investigators

Highly skilled investigators are deployed to the sites of transportation occurrences (incidents or accidents) to collect information; they do research and analysis to identify the causes of the occurrence and identify risks, and finally prepare detailed reports for publication. Find out more about the investigation process.

TSB investigators come from a variety of professional backgrounds: they are human factor specialists, air traffic controllers, airplane pilots, helicopter pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers, marine chief engineers, master mariners, naval architects, rail equipment and infrastructure specialists, locomotive engineers, and certified engineering pipeline specialists.

Investigators are in the occupational groups listed below, all of which have their own qualification standards.
