Rail transportation safety investigation R18W0133
The occurrence
On 29 May 2018, a Canadian Pacific train proceeding east on the Carberry Subdivison near Winnipeg, Manitoba, derailed 13 intermodal cars, consisting of 25 platforms and 49 containers. One of those cars was transporting 3 containers loaded with fireworks. At the time of the occurrence, the wind was blowing at 90km/h. No injuries were reported. The TSB is investigating.

On , a VIA Rail passenger train struck a delivery truck at a public crossing at Mile 57 on the Guelph Subdivison near the city of Breslau, Ontario. The lone occupant of the truck was fatally injured.

On , a Canadian Pacific (CP) train, while exiting northward the siding track at Mile 35.87 of the Adirondack Subdivision, derailed 5 loaded cars near Delson, Quebec. Approximately 300 feet of track was damaged. The train conductor was injured.

The occurrence
On , at approximately 1440 Eastern Standard Time, a snow removal track unit that was proceeding westward on the south track of the Vaudreuil Subdivision struck a vehicle at the Woodland Avenue public crossing at Mile 12.15 in Beaconsfield, Quebec. The crossing was equipped with flashing lights, bell and gates. Emergency services responded and provided treatment to one vehicle occupant who sustained minor injuries.

On , a Canadian Pacific train travelling southward went into emergency at Mile 50.7 of the Montana Subdivision near Stirling, Alberta. The inspection revealed that 16 loaded cars containing canola derailed. No injuries have been reported and no dangerous goods were involved. The TSB is investigating.

On , a Canadian Pacific train proceeding east near Blucher, Saskatchewan, derailed 37 cars loaded with bulk potash. There were no dangerous goods involved and no injuries were reported.

The occurrence
On , at 1250 Central Daylight Time, Canadian Pacific Railway unit freight train 369-377 was proceeding northward at 40 mph on the Emerson Subdivision when it experienced a train-initiated emergency brake application. A subsequent inspection determined that 22 covered hopper cars loaded with corn had derailed while exiting a bridge (Mile 53.60) near the town of Dominion City, Manitoba. There were no injuries.
