Rail transportation safety investigation R13C0008

The occurrence

On 19 January 2013, at 1523 Mountain Standard Time, eastward freight train CP 118-19 struck a vehicle at a level crossing at Mile 50.61 of the Brooks Subdivision. As a result of the collision, both the vehicle, a tanker truck loaded with petroleum crude oil (UN 1267), and the lead locomotive caught fire. The driver of the tanker truck and the two train crew members sustained minor injuries.

The occurrence

At approximately 0909 Mountain Standard Time on 26 December 2012, Canadian National freight train Q-19051-24 was proceeding eastward from Edmonton, Alberta, to Wainwright, Alberta, when it struck 3 A&B Rail Services Limited employees at approximately Mile 259.20 of Canadian National's Wainwright Subdivision, near Clover Bar Yard. The 3 employees, who were performing snow-clearing activities near a switch, were admitted to hospital; 2 of them were seriously injured.

The occurrence

On , a Canadian National Railway train, travelling westward at approximately 51 mph, experienced an undesired emergency brake application at mile 24.3 of the Wainwright Subdivision, near Landis, Saskatchewan. An inspection revealed that 41 cars, all loaded grain hoppers, and 2 mid-train remotes had derailed. No injuries have been reported and no dangerous goods were involved.

The occurrence

On , at about 0940 Eastern Standard Time, Canadian National Railway Company freight train Q14891-08, proceeding eastward on the Dundas Subdivision, struck a snowplow on the sidewalk at the Colborne Street public crossing at Mile 77.66 in London, Ontario. The crossing was equipped with flashing light signals, a bell, and gates. The lone occupant of the snowplow was fatally injured.
