Marine transportation safety investigation M14C0219

The occurrence

On 14 October 2014, the tanker "NANNY" touched bottom south of Deer Island, Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut. The tanker was outbound from Baker Lake, destined for the coast of Labrador, Nfld and Labrador, with a partial load of diesel on board. A 2 foot crack was reported in number 3 ballast tank allowing ingress of water. There were no injuries or pollution reported. The vessel continued on its voyage.

The occurrence

On 14 March 2014, the bulk carrier John I became disabled off the southwest coast of Newfoundland and Labrador due to flooding in the engine room. The vessel drifted approximately 41 nautical miles before grounding on the Rose Blanche Shoals the following day. There were no injuries, and all 23 crew members were evacuated by helicopter. It was reported that no pollutants were released.
